Propulsion is a compact exploration of a simple rhythmic motive first presented in the horns in the opening bar of the piece. At just over 6 minutes, this concise, single-movement work for orchestra propels itself through virtuosity and rhythmic propulsion. Constantly varying in articulation and division of the 7/8 meter, the piece drives forward to an almost majestic concluding section in a stabilizing 3/4 meter. The initial rhythmic motive is stated in its final iteration by the trumpets and upper woodwinds.
